What does “GST registration cancelled” mean?

“Cancelled” means the business’s GST registration is no longer valid from the cancellation date: it shouldn’t charge GST or issue tax invoices after that date. Registrations are cancelled when a business closes, on request, or by the tax department (for example for not filing returns). As a buyer, check the date and ask before paying.

Why it matters to you as a buyer

  • Input tax credit. You generally can’t claim input tax credit on a tax invoice issued after the supplier’s registration was cancelled. Talk to your CA for your case.
  • Invoices. A business with a cancelled registration shouldn’t be charging you GST. If it is, ask why.
  • Who you are dealing with. A recently cancelled registration may mean the business has closed, changed its structure, or stopped filing returns.

“Cancelled” vs “Suspended”

Suspended usually means cancellation proceedings have started and the registration is on hold while the business responds. Cancelled means the registration has ended. A cancelled registration can sometimes be restored if the business applies for revocation within the time allowed by the rules.

What to do

  1. Search the GSTIN and note the status and cancellation date.
  2. Ask the supplier for the reason and whether they have another active GSTIN.
  3. Don’t pay GST on invoices issued after the cancellation date until it’s clear.
  4. Check again before every large payment: status can change.

Questions people ask

Can a cancelled GST registration be restored?

Sometimes. A business can apply for revocation of a cancellation within the time limit in the GST rules. Until it is restored, the registration stays cancelled.

Does “cancelled” mean the business did something wrong?

Not always. Businesses also cancel when they close or change structure. The tax department can cancel too, for example for not filing returns. Ask the supplier for the reason.

Where can I see the cancellation date?

On the GST record of the business: search the GSTIN on REFFNET or the GST portal’s Search Taxpayer.
